International Day of Charity

About the International Day of Charity, September 5.

Charity, along with volunteerism and philanthropy, unites people and contributes to building a more inclusive and sustainable society. Charity helps to overcome the effects of humanitarian crises, complements government efforts in healthcare, education, housing, and social protection. Charity also plays a role in the development of culture, science, sports, and environmental protection. Furthermore, it supports the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society.

On December 17, 2012, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 67/105, declaring September 5 as the International Day of Charity. Each year, numerous charitable events are held worldwide on this day in support of development and peace, with backing from the United Nations. This day provides an opportunity not only for conducting charitable events but also for raising awareness about charity work and the various ways each person can contribute or seek assistance.

Charity amplifies the voice of reason and compassion in times of conflict. As global social inequality continues to grow, in September 2015, UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda includes 17 goals that highlight the importance of civic engagement. These 17 Sustainable Development Goals cover six core areas: dignity, people, planet, prosperity, justice, and partnership. Achieving them can improve people’s lives and safeguard our planet. This can be accomplished by intensifying collective efforts to address global challenges and creating an environment where charitable organizations can improve people’s lives.
